How to sanitize a house?

1. AERATION

In order to properly renew your indoor air, ventilate at least once a day for 15 minutes all year long, prefer morning and evening when human activities are slowing down.

When you exercice certain activities such as cleaning, cooking or DIY, it is also recommended to always open your windows. Emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), these activities are highly polluting. In addition, when you tinker, wear a protective mask is recommended.


2. VENTILATION

The ventilation system of your home allows to renew the indoor air and to limit the proliferation of dust, mold, bacteria and pollutants. It is therefore important to regularly check the status of your system.

Therefore, air vents as well as VMC (controlled mechanical ventilation) must not be obstructed and need to be cleaned and checked regularly. 


3. HUMIDITY

Monitor the humidity rate of your home, it must be between 40 % and 60%

A humidity level too high or a water leak will promote the development of molds, potentially allergenic. If mold appears in your home, it is necessary to find the origin. If it is a leak, repair it as soon as possible and clean the contaminated surface.

On the other side, too dry air favors the proliferation of dust and can provoke respiratory problems. In this case, the use of an air humidifier is recommended.


4. SCENTED PRODUCTS

The pledge of some products such as room fragrances, deodorants or products based on essential oil is to sanitize your home. But these are often sources of disguised pollutants. In fact, they pollute your air more than they do purify it.

Harmful to your airways, scented products emit toxic and allergenic substances, so you need to strongly limit their usage.

Similarly, avoidproducts of combustion such as scented candles and incense, which emit carbon monoxide, fine particles and volatile organic compounds.


5. MAINTENANCE PRODUCTS

Standard cleaning and maintenance products we use are mostly toxic and allergens. Therefore try to reduce to a minimum their usage and avoid overdose or mixtures that can cause chemical emissions in the air.

Preferably, choose ecolabeled products that limit the presence of toxic substances and which are less harmful to your health. It's even better to use natural products such as white vinegar, baking soda or black soap to clean your home.


6. HEATING

Make sure that your combustion appliances (fuel-buning furnaces, gaz heating systems…) are regularly maintained and are functionning properly. Decrepit or defective devices release large amounts of pollutants such as carbon monoxide, fine particles or oxides of nitrogen ... and can cause very serious health problems.

Preferably, choose ecolabeled products that limit the presence of toxic substances and which are less harmful to your health. It's even better to use natural products such as white vinegar, baking soda or black soap to clean your home.


7. TOBACCO 

Above all it is recommended not to smoke indoor.

Tobacco' smoke contains harmful substances from combustion, which once in suspension in the indoor air, can be inhaled by all people in the room and this for several hours.

However, if someone smokes indoors or at the window, it is necessary to air well the room afterward.
